Team Newfoundland and Labrador is composed of gold medalists from the most recent Skills Canada Provincial Competition. Competitors who have achieved the required minimum score of 60% and placed first (gold) in a provincially-offered, nationally-eligible category may be invited to join Team NL.

In addition to competitors, Team NL includes a number of registered delegates who attend the National Competition in various roles, such as post-secondary coaches, chaperones, and staff.

The registration fee is $650, which covers:

- Airfare

- Accommodations (Hotel Breakfast Included)

- Shuttles and Transportation at the Skills Canada National Competition

- Team Newfoundland and Labrador Uniform

- Full registration package (National Level; this will include a backpack, shirt and additional swag)

- Welcome Reception and Opening / Closing Ceremony tickets

- Competitor Entrance fees

- Lunch on Competition days

- Team Activity

Note: The deadline for national registration is approximately 1–2 weeks after the Provincial Competition. A timeline will be provided to school liaisons prior to the Provincials so that eligible students are informed in advance and can begin preparing if selected.

a. Students invited to participate on Team NL will be notified immediately following the Skills Canada Provincial Competitions Award Ceremony. After the ceremony eligible competitors will gather as a group to receive their official invitation and Competitor Information package.

b. Students will be given a strict due date to submit consent forms and registration information

          i. This date will be shared with their liaison in advance so all students competing are aware beforehand.

          ii. To be accepted as a member of Team NL, both student and teacher/instructor must complete the commitment contract and all other registration forms highlighted in the Competitor Information Package.

          iii. Important: Students that fail to return the required forms by the due date will forfeit their spot.

          iv. SCNL may request additional information at a later date if needed by Skills Competence Canada or The Airline for booking purposes.

c. Once the competitor is confirmed, the SCNL office will be in touch to connect them with the Provincial Technical Committee to begin training.

          i. Training will vary for each competitor depending on their trade, schedule, and level of commitment. Students will work closely with their technical experts to develop a personalized training plan and outline the next steps for preparing for the National Competition.

d. SCNL will maintain regular contact throughout the preparation period to support competitors and ensure they are progressing in their training.

Note: SCNL does not cover the cost of coaches/parents to attend SCNC, but upon request will make every effort to include observers in team activities.

Each province/territory is eligible to select or nominate one individual/ team for representation in each registered contest area

• To participate in the Skills Canada National Competitions (SCNC), a candidate must be registered by a member province or territory of Skills Canada.

• The competitor must have participated in a Skills Canada Provincial Competition or be a direct participant through the provincial organization should their province not host a provincial contest in the area in which they are to compete at the SCNC.

Secondary Level Competitors Must:

a) Attend a public, separate or private secondary school, between July 1st of the year following the last competition to the date of the beginning of the Skills Canada National Competition for which he or she is registered.

b) Be 22 years of age or less on December 31st of the year of the competition.

Post-Secondary/Apprenticeship Level Competitors Must:

A competitor must be a registered student with a training institution in a related program in the skill in which they wish to compete at any time between July 1st of the previous year of the SCNC and the start of the SCNC.

For Apprenticeable skills, a competitor must be registered in a related program, pre-apprenticeship program or be a registered apprentice in the trade (skill) in which they wish to compete at any time between July 1st of the previous year of the SCNC and the start date of the SCNC.

Competitors must not be a certified journey person prior to May 1st of the SCNC year, in the skill area in which they wish to compete. SCC’s definition of a certified journey person is someone who has received one or more of the following from their Provincial/Territorial Issuing Authority.

- Journeyman Certificate

- Certificate of Qualification

- Confirmation of Apprentice Completion Letter

- Completion Letter

International Students

Permanent residents (landed immigrants), protected persons and international students have

the right to compete at SCNC. International Students must have been registered in a secondary

or post-secondary level school at any time between July 1st of the year of the last SCNC, and the start date of SCNC for which the competitor is registered. If a competitor’s study permit expires prior to SCNC, the competitor must ensure that they have legal standing to stay in Canada in order to participate at SCNC.

Eligibility to be on Team Canada

Gold medal winners at the SCNC may be invited to go if they are eligible. To be a member of WSTC, competitors must meet the WorldSkills (WS) age eligibility requirements: Competitors must not be older than 22 in the year of the WorldSkills Competition (WSC). Exceptions exist in Mechatronics, Aircraft Maintenance, and Cloud Computing where competitors must not be older than 25 in the year of the WSC.

Competitors who competed at SCNC as International Students and who are invited to be a member of WSTC must meet the following criteria throughout the training period, inclusive of the WorldSkills competition (*SCC will be requesting documented proof throughout the process):

- Physically reside in Canada.

- Be approved to live in Canada or have temporary residence status.

All SCNC competitions are designed and implemented by the National Technical Committees (NTCs). NTC’s are all volunteer experts from across the Country, these experts work together throughout the year to create a fair competitive competition that will be even for competitors in every province.

The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) is held annually between the 21st and 23rd week of the year (May 15th - June 7th).

Each year SCNC will move between Provinces.
