Skills Canada Intermediate Challenge
In most competition areas, the gold medal winners at the Skills Canada Intermediate Challenge are invited to the Skills Canada Provincial Competition where they compete against high school students for the opportunity to represent Newfoundland and Labrador nationally at the annual Skills Canada National Competition.

FAQs
a. Eligible students must be registered at an Intermediate level (Grades 7, 8 & 9) educational institution or enrolled in a registered home school that is affiliated with Skills Canada and based in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
b. Must submit a signed release form, also signed by parent or guardian if under 18.
c. SCNL reserves the right to invite other Intermediate students from different Provinces / Territories to encourage growth in the Intermediate-level competition nationally.
The Skills Canada Intermediate Challenge (SCIC) is a 1 day event held annually, (generally) on the last Saturday in November at College of the North Atlantic, Prince Philip Drive Campus.
The list of SCIC competitions will be determined in September of each year and will be based on the competition list offered at the preceding Provincial Competitions and the commitment of PTC volunteers.
The competition list can be found online and will be distributed to every intermediate school in the province.
a. A registration package will be sent to the principal of every Intermediate School within the province with grade 7, 8, and 9 students.
b. This registration package will include an informative letter, including a registration and school affiliation form.
c. Schools must appoint a school liaison to communicate with SCNL Competition staff throughout the registration process.
d. Schools will complete the registration link identifying areas in which they would like to compete to SCNL by the pre-registration deadline in early October.
i. Please note that specific dates will be included in the registration package.
e. Affiliated schools will then receive a confirmation package with release forms for each competitor. The release forms and registration fee, which is $20 per student, must be received by the identified deadline in November.
f. Additional rounds of registration may open to allow schools extra spaces in competition areas.
i. Second-round placements will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. As a result, affiliated schools may have 2–3 students in a category if no other schools submit additional students.
g. Upon arriving at the competition, registered competitors and teams must check in at the registration desk and attend the orientation session for their contest area
The liaison is an individual that is appointed by the school/ organization to act as the main point of contact for Skills Canada NL. This individual will be responsible for relaying competition rules and contest descriptions/information with all parties (students/instructors) within the school/organization.
All SCNL competitions are designed and implemented by Provincial Technical Committees (PTCs). PTC’s are all volunteer experts.
Judges may be the Technical Committee or additional volunteer experts from the community.
Registration fee is $20 (Each registered student will receive a T-Shirt and snacks at the event). Fee is not required upon initial registration - a later date will be outlined to the school liaison who will collect the money and directly communicate with the Skills Canada NL office on payment methods.
Transportation is not provided.
No. It is recommended but not required that a parent/teacher accompany the student - Students are not allowed to leave the campus unless accompanied by a guardian/teacher
However, it is open to the public to come view the competitions, and enjoy the Try-A-Trades offered.
There are some important steps you can take to ensure you have a successful and fun day competing:
a. Read through your competition areas Contest Description. Contest Descriptions are critical when competing with Skills Canada, these descriptions highlight the duties to be performed, what you’ll need to bring vs. what will be supplied, and even how you’ll be marked. Some competitions have additional documents like project drawings that accompany the contest description so make sure to review all material related to the competition area.
b. Be sure to closely review the list of equipment you are required to bring and what will be supplied; if you are expected to bring the equipment it will not be provided on the day of. You want to be prepared when arriving at the competition site to complete all the required tasks.
c. Practice, practice, practice! It is important that you go through your competition before arriving so you are prepared, confident and ready to compete!
d. Check your start time so you will not miss your competition - schedules will be posted to our social media in advance so students and the public are aware. It’s a good idea to arrive early to
get parking, go through the registration process, and find the correct room your competition will be held in.
Competition gold medal winners of the Intermediates may go onto Skills Canada Provincial Competition if they attain a minimum score of 60% in their contest.
*Note: Not all categories move forward to the Provincial Competition. Any category that does not move forward will be outlined in the registration process and indicated throughout the event so students are aware.
